Since leaving academic research, I have been fortunate to have been awarded funding for various projects by the following organisations:

2000-1 Wellcome Trust History of Medicine, for research into 18th-century Dutch and Scottish anatomists for The Embalmer's Book of Recipes.

2002-3  Wellcome Trust,  the Biochemistry Society and Pfizer UK, to support the second Words and Pictures: explaining science conference, Carlisle.

2003-2005 Wellcome Trust People Award, jointly with Dr Tom Shakespeare, PEALS, Newcastle, for 'Talking Science in Cumbria'

2005  Creative Partnerships CARA award, for Footprints in the sand, with Stephen Burrowes, Head of Science, for Year 7 &8 students at Settlebeck School, Sedbergh

2010-2011 ESRC Genomics Forum, Edinburgh, for 'Bright Ideas' Visiting Fellowship

2012 Centre for Cognitive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology, Dept. of Psychology, Edinburgh University, a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship, for writing the stories of participants in the Lothian Birth Cohort (LBC) Studies.

2014 Edinburgh University for the cost of producing paperback and ebook versions of 'Lifetimes', the stories about the LBC participants.

2104 Herdwick Sheep Breeders Association and the WoolFest committee, for help towards 'Hefted to the Hills', a celebration of the Herdwick sheep in words and music (WoolFest, Cockermouth, 2014)
